BAENA , a See also:

town of See also:southern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Cordova; 32 M. by road S.E. of the See also:city of Cordova. Pop. (19o0) 14,539. Baena is picturesquely situated near the See also:river Marbella, on the slope of a See also:hill crowned with a See also:castle, which formerly belonged to the famous See also:captain Gonzalo de Cordova. Farming, See also:horse-breeding, See also:linen-See also:weaving and the manufacture of See also:olive-oil are the See also:chief See also:local See also:industries. The nearest railway station is Luque (pop. 4972), 4 M. S.E. on the See also:Jaen-See also:Lucena See also:line. The site of the See also:Roman town (Baniana or Biniana) can still be traced, and various Roman antiquities have been disinterred. In 1292 the See also:Moors under Mahommed II. of See also:Granada vainly besieged Baena, which was held for Sancho IV. of See also:Castile; and the five Moorish heads in its coat-of-arms commemorate the See also:defence.
