BALLENSTEDT , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the duchy of See also:Anhalt, on the See also:river Getel, 20 M. E. of Quedlinburg by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 5423. It is pleasantly situated under the See also:north-eastern declivity of the Harz mountains. The inhabitants are mostly engaged in See also:agriculture and there is practically no other See also:industry. The See also:palace of the See also:dukes of Anhalt, See also:standing on an See also:eminence, contains a library and collections of various kinds, including a See also:good picture See also:gallery. It is approached by a See also:fine See also:avenue of trees and is surrounded by a well-wooded See also:park. In the Schlosskirche the See also:grave of See also:Albert the See also:Bear, See also:margrave of See also:Brandenburg (Hoc–1170) has been discovered.
