BARCELONNETTE , a See also:town in the See also:department of Basses-Alpes, in the S.E. of See also:France. Pop. (1906) 2075. It is built at a height of 3717 ft. on the right See also:bank of the Ubaye See also:river, on which it is the most important See also:place. It is situated in a wide and very fertile valley, and is surrounded by many villas, built by natives who have made their See also:fortune in See also:Mexico, and are locally known as See also:les Americains. The town itself is mainly composed of a See also:long See also:street (flanked by two others), which is really the road from See also:Grenoble to See also:Cuneo over the See also:Col de 1'Argentiere (6545 ft.). The only remarkable buildings in the town are a striking See also:clock-See also:tower of the ,5th See also:century (the remains of a Franciscan See also:convent) and the Musee Chabrand, which contains a very See also:complete collection of birds, both See also:European and extra-European. Refounded in 1231 by See also:Raymond See also:Berenger IV., See also:count of See also:Provence (he was of the See also:family of the See also:counts of See also:Barcelona, whence the name of the town he rebuilt), Barcelonnette passed to See also:Savoy in 1388 (formal cession in 1419), and in 1713 by the treaty of See also:Utrecht was ceded to France in See also:exchange for the valleys of Exilles, Fenestrelles, and See also:Chateau Dauphin (Casteldelfino). It was the See also:birth-place of J. A. See also:Manuel (1775-1827), the well-known Liberal orator at the See also:time of the Restoration' of 1815, after whom the See also:principal square of the town is named. See F.
