MANUEL, JACQUES See also:ANTOINE (1775-1827) , See also:French politician and orator, was See also:born on the loth of See also:December 1775. When seventeen years old he entered the See also:army, which he See also:left in 1797 to become a lawyer. In 1814 he was chosen a member of the chamber of representatives, and in 1815 he urged the claim of See also:Napoleon's son to the French See also:throne and protested against the restoration of the Bourbons. After this event he actively opposed the See also:government, his eloquence making him the foremost orator among the members of the Left. In See also:February 1823 his opposition to the proposed expedition into See also:Spain to help See also:Ferdinand VII. against his rebellious subjects produced a tumult in the See also:Assembly. Manuel was expelled, but he refused to accept this See also:sentence, and force was employed to remove him. He died on the 20th of See also:August 1827.
