BARTOLOMMEO See also:

VIVARINI iS known to have worked from 1450 to 1499. He learned oil-See also:painting from Antonello da See also:Messina, and is said to have produced, in 1473, the first oil picture done in See also:Venice. This is in the See also:church of S. Giovanni e Paolo—a large See also:altar-piece in nine divisions, representing See also:Augustine and other See also:saints. Most of his See also:works, however, including one in the See also:National See also:Gallery, are in See also:tempera. His outline is always hard, and his See also:colour See also:good; the figures have much dignified and devout expression. As " vivarino " means in See also:Italian a See also:goldfinch, he sometimes See also:drew a goldfinch as the See also:signature of his pictures.
