The apprehensions of Augustine's followers caused him to return to Rome, but the See also:pope furnished him with letters of See also:commendation and encouraged him to proceed. He landed in See also:Thanet in A.D. 597, and was favourably received by IEthelberht, See also:king of See also:Kent, who granted a dwelling-See also:place for the monks in Canterbury, and allowed them See also:liberty to preach. Augustine first made use of the See also:ancient See also:church of St See also:Martin at Canterbury, which before his arrival had been the See also:oratory of the See also:Queen Berhta and her See also:confessor Liudhard. IEthelberht uponhis See also:conversion employed all his See also:influence in support of the mission. In 6oi Augustine received the See also:pallium from Gregory and was given authority over the See also:Celtic churches in See also:Britain, as well as all future bishops consecrated in See also:English territory, including See also:York. Authority over the see of York was not, however, to descend to Augustine's successors. In 603 he consecrated See also:Christ Church, Canterbury, and built the monastery of SS. See also:Peter and See also:Paul, afterwards known as St Augustine's. At the See also:conference of Augustine's See also:Oak he endeavoured in vain to bring over the Celtic church to the observance of the See also:Roman See also:Easter.

He afterwards consecrated See also:

Mellitus and Justus to the See also:sees of See also:London and See also:Rochester respectively. The date of his See also:death is not recorded by See also:Bede, but MS. F of the Saxon See also:Chronicle puts it in 614, and the Annales Monasterienses in 612. See Bede, Eccl. Hist. (ed. by Plummer), i. 23–ii. 3.
