He was consecrated by St See also:Augustine before 604i and a See also:church was built for him in London by Aethelberht, See also:kit.* of See also:Kent; this church was dedicated to St See also:Paul, and Mellitus became first bishop of London. About ten years later the See also:East See also:Saxons reverted to heathenism and the bishop was driven from his see. He took See also:refuge in Kent and then in See also:Gaul, but soon returned to England, and in 619 became archbishop of Canterbury in See also:succession to See also:Laurentius. He died on the 24th of See also:April 624.
