It is the centre of a large See also:gold-See also:field consisting of See also:quartz ranges, with some alluvial deposits, and many of the mines are deep-level workings. The See also:discovery of alluvial gold in 1851 brought many immigrants to the See also:district; but the opening up of the quartz reefs in 1872 was the See also:principal See also:factor in the importance of Bendigo. It became a See also:municipality in 1855 and a city in 1871. It is the seat of See also:Anglican and See also:Roman See also:Catholic bishops. Besides See also:mining, the See also:local See also:industries are the manufacture of See also:Epsom pottery, bricks and tiles, See also:iron-See also:founding, See also:stone-cutting, See also:brewing, tanning and See also:coach-See also:building. The surrounding district produces quantities of See also:wheat and fruits for export, and much excellent See also:wine is made.
