(1901), 3580. It lies in an undulating See also:district on a small southern tributary of the See also:Trent, from which it is about 2 M. distant. The See also:church of St See also:Michael is a See also:fine example of See also:Norman See also:work, with certain See also:late details, having clerestoried See also:nave, See also:chancel and aisles, with central and two western towers. Melbourne See also:Hall, a See also:building of the See also:time of See also:William III., surrounded by formal Dutch gardens, stands in a domain owned at an See also:early date by the bishops of See also:Carlisle, whose tithe See also:barn remains near the church. They obtained the See also:manor in 1133. In 1311 See also:Robert de See also:Holland fortified a See also:mansion here, and in 1327 this See also:castle belonged to See also:Henry, See also:earl of See also:Lancaster; but it was dismantled in 146o, and little more than the site is now traceable. The See also:title of See also:Viscount Melbourne was taken from this town. There are manufactures of See also:silk, and boots and shoes.
