He joined the See also:stage in 1831, his first engagement being with the travelling See also:company of H. E. Bethmann in See also:Dessau, See also:Cothen, See also:Bernburg and See also:Meiningen. Subsequently he was See also:tenor in several theatres in See also:Westphalia and on the See also:Rhine, and became manager of the See also:theatre at See also:Wesel, where he produced a See also:comedy, Das bemooste See also:Haupt (1841), which met with See also:great success. After an engagement in See also:Cologne, he managed the new theatre at See also:Elberfeld (1844–1845) and in 1849 was appointed teacher on the See also:staff of the Rhenish school of See also:music in Cologne. In 1855 he was appointed See also:intendant of the municipal theatre in See also:Frankfort-on-See also:Main, but retired in 1861, and died in Leipzig on the 26th of See also:September 1873. Benedix's comedies, the scenes of which are mostly laid in upper See also:middle-class See also:life, still enjoy some popularity; the best-known are: Dr Wespe; See also:Die Hochzeitsreise; Der See also:Vetter; Das Gefangnis; Das Liigen; Ein Lustspiel; Der Storenfried; Die Dienstboten; Aschenbrodel; Die zdrtlichen Verwandten. The See also:chief characteristics of his farces are a clear See also:plot and See also:bright, easy and natural See also:dialogue. Among his more serious See also:works are: Bilder aus dem Schauspielerleben (Leipzig, 1847); Der mundliche Vortrag (Leipzig, 1859–1860); Das Wesen See also:des deutschen Rhythmus (Leipzig, 1862) and, posthumously, Die Shakespearomanie (1873), in which he attacks the extreme See also:adoration of the See also:British poet. Benedix's Gesammelte dramatische Werke appeared in 27 vols. (Leipzig, 1846—1875) ; a selection under the See also:title Volkstheater in 20 vols. (Leipzig, 1882) ; and a collection of smaller comedies as Haustheater in 2 vols. (loth ed., Leipzig, 1891); see Benedix's autobiography in the Gartenlaube for 1871.
