From the Zittau gymnasium, where he spent the five years 1821—1826, Haupt removed to the university of See also:Leipzig with the intention of studying See also:theology; but the natural See also:bent of his mind and the See also:influence of See also:Professor G. See also:Hermann soon turned all his energies in the direction of See also:philosophy. On the See also:close of his university course (1830) he returned to his father's See also:house, and the next seven years were devoted to quiet See also:work, not only at See also:Greek, Latin and German, but at Old See also:French, Provencal and Bohemian. He formed with See also:Lachmann at See also:Berlin a friendship which had See also:great effect on his intellectual development. In See also:September 18J7 he " habilitated " at Leipzig as Privatdozent,von Fallersleben, he started the Altdeutsche Blotter, which in 1841 gave See also:place to the Zeitschrift fiir deutsches Altertum, of which he continued editor till his See also:death. See also:Hartmann von Aue's Erec (1839) and his Lieder, Biichlein and Der arme Heinrich (1842), See also:Rudolf von See also:Ems's Gisler See also:Gerhard (184o) and See also:Conrad von See also:Wurzburg's Engelhard (1844) are the See also:principal German See also:works which he edited. To See also:form a collection of the French songs of the 16th See also:century was one of his favourite schemes, but a little volume published after his death, Franzosische Volkslieder (1877), is the only See also:monument of his labours in that direction.
