Apart from the old See also:quarter lying on the Mulde, the town is well built, is surrounded by pleasant gardens and contains many handsome streets and spacious squares. Among the latter is the See also:Grosse Markt with a statue of See also:Prince See also:Leopold I. of Anhalt-Dessau, " the old Dessauer." Of the six churches, the Schlosskirche, adorned with paintings by See also:Lucas See also:Cranach, in one of which (" The Last Supper ") are portraits of several reformers, is the most interesting. The ducal See also:palace, See also:standing in extensive grounds, contains a collection of See also:historical curiosities and a See also:gallery of pictures, which includes See also:works by See also:Cimabue, See also:Lippi,See also:Rubens,See also:Titian and See also:Van Dyck. In the environs are the ducal villas of Georgium and Luisium, the gardens of which, as well as those of the neighbouring town of Worlitz, are much admired.
Dessau was probably founded by See also:Albert the See also:Bear; it had attained civic rights as See also:early as 1213. It first began to grow into importance at the See also:close of the 17th See also:century, in consequence of the religious emancipation of the See also:Jews in 1686, and of the See also:Lutherans in 1697.
