ZERBST , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the duchy of See also:Anhalt, situated on the Nuthe, II m. N.W. of See also:Dessau and 27 M. S.E. of See also:Magdeburg by the railway Dessau-See also:Leipzig. Pop. (1900) 17,095. It is still surrounded in See also:part by old walls and bastions, while other portions of the whilom fortifications have been converted into pleasarit promenades. It contains five churches, one of which (St See also:Nicholas), built in 1446-88, is a See also:good example of the See also:late See also:Gothic See also:style as See also:developed in See also:Saxony, with its spacious proportions, groined vaulting, and See also:bare See also:simple pillars. The town See also:hall See also:dates from about 148o, but it was disfigured by additions in the beginning of the 17th See also:century. It contains the municipal museum, among the See also:chief treasures of which is a See also:Luther See also:Bible illustrated by See also:Lucas See also:Cranach the younger. The See also:palace (1681—1750) has been used as a depository of archives since 1872. There are several See also:quaint old houses, with high gables, in the See also:market-See also:place, in the See also:middle of which stand a See also:Roland See also:column, of about 1445, and a See also:bronze figure known as the Butterjungfer (See also:butter-girl), of uncertain origin and meaning, but now regarded as the See also:palladium of the town. The old Franciscan monastery, with See also:fine cloisters, founded in 1250, contains the gymnasium; a Cistercian nunnery of 1214 has been converted into See also:barracks; and the Augustinian monastery of 1390 has been a See also:hospital since 1525.
