ZERBST , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the duchy of See also:Anhalt, situated on the Nuthe, II m. N.W. of See also:Dessau and 27 M. S.E. of See also:Magdeburg by the railway Dessau-See also:Leipzig. Pop. (1900) 17,095. It is still surrounded in See also:part by old walls and bastions, while other portions of the whilom fortifications have been converted into pleasarit promenades. It contains five churches, one of which (St See also:Nicholas), built in 1446-88, is a See also:good example of the See also:late See also:Gothic See also:style as See also:developed in See also:Saxony, with its spacious proportions, groined vaulting, and See also:bare See also:simple pillars. The town See also: See also:Gold and See also:silver articles, See also:silk, See also:plush, See also:cloth, See also:leather, See also:soap, See also:starch, chemicals and carriages are among the chief manufactures. See also:Iron-See also:founding is carried on; and several breweries are engaged in the preparation of Zerbster See also:bitter See also:beer, which enjoys considerable repute. Zerbst is an See also:ancient town, mentioned in 949. In 1307 it came into the See also:possession of the Anhalt See also:family, and from 1603 till 1793 was the See also:capital of the See also:collateral See also:branch of Anhalt-Zerbst.
