COTHEN , or KoTHEN, a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the duchy of See also:Anhalt on the Ziethe, at the junction of several railway lines, 42 M. N.W. of See also:Leipzig by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 22,978. It consists of an old and a new town with four suburbs. The former See also:palace of the See also:dukes of Anhalt-Cothen, in the old town, has See also:fine gardens and contains collections of pictures and coins, the famous ornithological collection of Johann See also:Friedrich See also:Naumann (1780-'857), and a library of some 20,000 volumes. Of the churches the Lutheran Jakobskirche (called the See also:cathedral), a See also:Gothic See also:building with some fine old stained See also:glass, is noteworthy. Besides the usual classical and See also:modern See also:schools (Gymnasium and Realschule) Cothen possesses a technical See also:institute, a school of gardening and a school of forestry. The See also:industries include See also:iron-See also:founding and the manufacture of agricultural and other machinery, See also:malt, See also:beet-See also:root See also:sugar, See also:leather, See also:spirits, &c.; a tolerably active See also:trade is carried on in See also:grain, See also:wool, potatoes and vegetables. Among others, there is a See also:monument to See also:Sebastian See also:Bach, who was See also:music director here from '717 to 1723. In the loth See also:century Cothen was a Slav See also:settlement, which was captured and destroyed by the See also:German See also:king See also:Henry I. in 927. By the '2th century it had secured town rights and become a considerable centre of trade in agricultural produce.

In 1300 it was burned by the See also:

margrave of See also:Meissen. In 1547 the town was taken from its See also:prince, Wolfgang (a See also:cadet of the See also:house of Anhalt), who had joined the See also:league of See also:Schmalkalden, and given by the See also:emperor See also:Charles V., with the See also:rest of the prince's possessions, to the See also:Spanish See also:general and painter, Felipe Ladron y See also:Guevara (1510-1563), from whom it was, however, soon repurchased. See also:Hahnemann, the founder of See also:homoeopathy, lived and worked in Cothen. From 1603 to 1847 Cothen was the See also:capital of the principality, later duchy, of Anhalt-Cothen.
