SCHMALKALDEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hesse-See also:Nassau, situated in a narrow valley at the See also:south-western slope of the Thuringian See also:forest, 3o m. S.W. of See also:Erfurt, on the railway Wernshausen-St Blasii. Pop. (1905) 9529. It has a See also:Gothic See also:parish See also:church, a See also:palace—Schloss Wilhelmsburgwith an interesting See also:chapel and a collection of antiquities, and possesses a Gothic town See also:hall in which the important See also:Protestant See also:League of Schmalkalden, or Smalkald, was concluded in 1531, and also the See also:house in which the articles of Schmalkalden were See also:drawn up in 1537 by See also:Luther, See also:Melanchthon and other reformers. It has three ,other Evangelical churches, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic church and several See also:schools. Its See also:industries are chiefly connected with ironwares, but See also:leather, See also:beer, See also:soap and toys are also manufactured. Karl Wilhelms (1815-1873), the composer of " See also:Die Wacht am Rhein," was See also:born here, and there is a memorial of him in the See also:market-See also:place. Schmalkalden, which was first mentioned in 874, came wholly into the See also:possession of Hesse in 1583, having been a town since 1335. See See also:Wagner, Geschichte der Stadt and Herrschaft Schmalkalden (See also:Marburg, 1849) ; and Wilisch, Schmalkalden and See also:seine Umgebungen (Schmalkalden, 1884).
