It is situated about 3000 ft. above the See also:sea in the See also:Shire See also:Highlands 300 M. by See also:river and See also:rail N.N.W. of the See also:Chinde mouth of the See also:Zambezi. Pop. about 6000 natives and See also:loo whites. It is the headquarters of the See also:principal trading firms and missionary See also:societies in the protectorate. It is also a station on the See also:African trans-See also:continental See also:telegraph See also:line. The chief See also:building is the See also:Church of See also:Scotland church, a See also:fine red See also:brick building, a mixture of See also:Norman and See also:Byzantine styles, with lofty turrets and See also:white domes. It stands in a large open space and is approached by an See also:avenue of cypresses and See also:eucalyptus. The church was built entirely by native labour. Blantyre was founded in 1876 by Scottish missionaries, and is named after the birthplace of See also:David See also:Livingstone.
