The parish lies a few See also:miles See also:south-See also:east of See also:Glasgow, and contains High Blantyre (pop. 2521), Blantyre See also:Works (or See also:Low Blantyre), Stonefield and several villages. The whole See also:district is See also:rich in See also:coal, the See also:mining of which is extensively carried on. Blantyre Works (pop. 1683) was the birthplace of See also:David See also:Livingstone (1813–1873) and his See also:brother See also:Charles (1821-1873), who as lads were both employed as piecers in a See also:local See also:cotton-See also:mill. The scanty remains of Blantyre Priory, founded towards the See also:close of the 13th See also:century, stand on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Clyde, almost opposite the beautiful ruins of See also:Bothwell See also:Castle. High Blantyre and Blantyre Works are connected with Glasgow by the Caledonian railway. Stonefield (pop. 7288), the most populous See also:place in See also:BLASPHEMY 43 the parish, entirely occupied with mining, lies between High Blantyre and Blantyre Works.
