BLAUBEUREN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, 12 M. W. of See also:Ulm, with which it is connected by railway. Pop. (1900) 3114. It is romantically situated in a See also:wild and deep valley of the Swabian See also:Alps at an See also:altitude of 1600 ft. and is partly surrounded by See also:ancient walls. Of the three churches (two Evangelical and one See also:Roman See also:Catholic) the most remarkable is the See also:abbey See also:church (Klosterkirche), a See also:late See also:Gothic See also:building dating from 1465-1496, the See also:choir of which contains beautiful 15th See also:century carved choir-stalls and a See also:fine high See also:altar with a See also:triptych (1496). The choir only is used for service (See also:Protestant), the See also:nave being used as a gymnasium. The town church (Stadtkirche) also has a fine altar with triptych. The See also:Benedictine abbey, founded in 1095, was used after the See also:Reformation as a school, and is now an Evangelical theological See also:seminary. There are two hospitals in the town.
