They were formerly a self-governing community, though subject to Abyssinia. The community is divided into two classes, the Shumaglieh or " elders " and See also:Tigre or " clients." The latter are See also:serfs of the former, who, however, cannot sell them. The Tigre goes with the See also:land, and his See also:master must protect him. In See also:blood-See also:money he is See also:worth another Tigre or ninety-three cows, while an See also:elder's See also:life is valued at one See also:hundred and fifty-eight See also:cattle or one of his own See also:caste. The eldest son of a Shumaglieh inherits his See also:father's two-edged See also:sword, See also:white cows, lands and slaves, but the See also:house goes to the youngest son. See also:Female chastity is much valued, but See also:women have no rights, inherit nothing, and are classed with the hyaena, the most despised See also:animal throughout Abyssinia. The See also:Bogo See also:husband never See also:sees the See also:face or pronounces the name of his See also:mother-in-See also:law, while it is a See also:crime for a wife to utter her husband's or father-in-law's name.
