BOLIVAR , an inland See also:

state of See also:Venezuela, lying S. of the See also:Orinoco and See also:Apure, with the Yuruari territory on the E., the Caroni See also:river forming the boundary, and the See also:Amazonas territory and See also:Brazil on the S. Frequent See also:political changes in Venezuela have led to various modifications in the See also:size and outlines of this state, which comprises large areas of uninhabited territory. It is a See also:country of extensive plains (lianas) covered in the See also:rainy See also:season with nutritious grass which disappears completely in the dry season, and of See also:great forests and numerous See also:rivers. Its See also:population was given in 1894 as 135,232, but its See also:area has been largely reduced since then. The See also:capital is See also:Ciudad Bolivar, formerly called Angostura, which is situated on the right See also:bank of the Orinoco about 240 M. above its mouth; pop. 11,686. Vessels of See also:light See also:draught easily ascend the Orinoco to this point, and a considerable See also:trade is carried on, the exports being See also:cocoa, See also:sugar, See also:cotton, hides, jerked See also:beef and various See also:forest products.
