BREDERODE, See also:HENRY, See also:COUNT of (1531-1568), was See also:born at See also:Brussels in 1531. He was the descendant of an See also:ancient See also:race, which had for some centuries been settled in See also:Holland, and had taken an active See also:part in the affairs of See also:war and See also:peace. Count Henry became a convert to the Reformed faith and placed him-self at the See also:side of the See also:prince of See also:Orange and Count See also:Egmont in resisting the introduction of the See also:Spanish See also:Inquisition and Spanish despotism into the See also:Netherlands. In 1566 he was one of the founders cf the confederacy of nobles who See also:bound themselves to maintain the rights and liberties of the See also:country by See also:signing a document known as " the See also:Compromise." On the 5th of See also:April of that See also:year Brederode accompanied to the See also:palace a See also:body of 250 confederates, of whom he acted as the spokesman, to See also:present to the See also:regent, See also:Margaret of See also:Parma, a See also:petition setting forth their grievances, called " the See also:Request." It was at a banquet at the Hotel Culemburg on the 8th of April, presided over by Brederode, that the See also:sobriquet of See also:les See also:Gueux, or " the Beggars," was first given to the opponents of Spanish See also:rule. Brederode was banished from the Netherlands by See also:Alva, and died in See also:exile shortly afterwards at the See also:early See also:age of See also:thirty-six.
