In the centre of the town is a large See also:market square to which roads See also:lead in See also:regular lines north, south, east and
west. Those going east and west are called avenues and are numbered, those See also:running north and south are called streets and are named. Through the centre of Market Square runs See also:Rhodes See also:Street. There are many handsome public and private buildings. In front of the stock See also:exchange is a See also:monument in memory of the 257 settlers killed in the See also:Matabele See also:rebellion of 1896, and at the junction of two of the See also:principal streets is a See also:colossal See also:bronze statue of See also:Cecil Rhodes. East of the town is a large See also:park and botanical gardens, beyond which is a residential suburb. The railway station and See also:water and electric 'See also:supply See also:works are in the south-west See also:quarter. An See also:avenue 13o ft. broad and nearly 12 m. See also:long, planted throughout its length with trees, leads from the town to See also:Government See also:House, which is built on the site of Lobengula's royal See also:kraal. The " See also:Place of Slaughter," as the Zulu word Bulawayo is interpreted, was founded about 1838 by Lobengula's See also:father, Mosilikatze, some distance south of the See also:present town, and continued to be the royal See also:residence till its occupation by the See also:British South Africa See also:Company's forces in See also:November 1893, when a new town was founded. Four years later the railway connectfngit with Cape Town was completed (see RHODESIA).
