CALENBERG, or KALENBERG , the name of a See also:district, including the See also:town of See also:Hanover, which was formerly See also:part of the duchy of See also:Brunswick. It received its name from a See also:castle near Schulenburg, and is traversed by the See also:rivers See also:Weser and Leine, its See also:area being about 1050 sq. m. The district was given to various cadets of the ruling See also:house of Brunswick, one of these being Ernest See also:Augustus, afterwards elector of Hanover, and the ancestor of the Hanoverian See also:kings of See also:Great See also:Britain and See also:Ireland.
