CARLOFORTE , a See also:

town of See also:Sardinia, in the See also:province of Cagliari, the See also:capital of the small See also:island (6 by 5 m.) of See also:San Pietro (anc. Accipitrum or `IepaKovvi o-or) off the See also:west See also:coast of Sardinia. Pop. (1901) 7693. It lies on the See also:east coast of the island, 6 m. west by See also:sea from Portoscuso, which is 47 M. west by See also:rail from Cagliari. It was founded in 1737 by See also:Charles See also:Emmanuel III. of See also:Savoy, who planted a See also:colony of Genoese, whose See also:dialect and See also:costume still prevail. In 1798 it was attacked by the Tunisians and 933 inhabitants taken away as slaves. They were ransomed after five years and the See also:place fortified. It is now a centre of the See also:tunny See also:fishery, and there are See also:manganese mines also. The See also:coral See also:banks, which were once important, are now exhausted. Three in. to the See also:south-east is the island of S. Antioco.
