CAVA DEI TIRRENI , a See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Salerno, 6 m. N.W. by See also:rail from the town of Salerno. Pop. (1901) town, 7611; See also:commune, 23,415. It lies fairly high in a richly cultivated valley, surrounded by wooded hills, and is a favourite resort of foreigners in See also:spring and autumn, and of the Neapolitans in summer. A mile to the See also:south-See also:west is the See also:village of Corpo di Cava (1970 ft.), with the See also:Benedictine See also:abbey of La Trinity della Cava, founded in 1025 by St Alferius. The See also:church and the greater See also:part of the buildings were entirely modernized in 1796. The old See also:Gothic cloisters are preserved. The church contains a See also:fine See also:organ and several See also:ancient sarcophagi. The archives, now See also:national See also:property, include documents and See also:MSS. of See also:great value (e.g. the Codex Legum Longobardorum of 1004) and fine See also:incunabula. The See also:abbot is keeper, and also See also:head of a boarding school. See M.
