It is served by the See also:Chicago, See also:Rock See also:Island & Pacific, the See also:Illinois Central, the Chicago See also:Great Western, and the See also:Waterloo, Cedar Falls & See also:Northern See also:railways. Its manufactures include See also:flour, ground feed, other cereal preparations, hardware specialties, canned vegetables (especially See also:Indian See also:corn), and planing-See also:mill products. It is the seat of the state normal school (1876), and has a public library. The See also:settlement of the See also:place, the See also:oldest in the county, was begun in 1847; it was laid out as a See also:town in 1851, incorporated as a See also:village in 1857, chartered as a city in 1865, and for a See also:short See also:time in 1853 was the county-seat.
