S.E. of See also:Nantes on the Ouest-Etat railway between that town and See also:Poitiers. Pop. (1906) 16,554. Cholet stands on an See also:eminence on the right See also:bank of the Moine, which is crossed by a See also:bridge of the 15th See also:century. A public See also:garden occupies the site of the old See also:castle; the public buildings and churches, the finest of which is Notre-See also:Dame, are See also:modern. The public institutions include the sub-prefecture, a tribunal of first instance, a chamber of See also:commerce, a See also:board of See also:trade-arbitrators, and a communal See also:college. There are See also:granite quarries in the vicinity of the town. The See also:chief See also:industry is the manufacture of See also:linen and linen handkerchiefs, which is also carried on in the neighbouring communes on a large See also:scale. Woollen and See also:cotton fabrics are also produced, and See also:bleaching and the manufacture of preserved foods are carried on. Choletis'the most important centre in France for the See also:sale of See also:fat See also:cattle, See also:sheep and pigs, for which See also:Paris is the chief See also:market. Megalithic monuments are numerous in the neighbourhood.

The town owes the rise of its prosperity to the See also:

settlement of weavers there by Edouard See also:Colbert, See also:count of Maulevrier, a See also:brother of the See also:great Colbert. It suffered severely in the See also:War of La See also:Vendee of 1793, insomuch that for years afterwards it was almost without in-habitants.
