CICELY , Myrrhis odorata (natural See also:

order See also:Umbelliferae), a perennial See also:herb with a leafy hollow See also:stem, 2 to 3 ft. high, much divided leaves, whitish beneath, a large sheathing See also:base, and terminal umbels of small See also:white See also:flowers, the See also:outer ones only of which are fertile. The See also:fruit is dark See also:brown, See also:long (; to 1 in.), narrow and beaked. The plant is a native of central and See also:southern See also:Europe, and is found in parts of See also:England and See also:Scotland in pastures, usually near houses. It has aromatic and stimulant properties and was formerly used as a pot-herb.
