DURIS , of See also:

Samos, See also:Greek historian, according to his own See also:account a descendant of See also:Alcibiades, was See also:born about 340 B.C. He must have been born and passed his See also:early years in See also:exile, since from 352 to 324 Samos was occupied by Athenian cleruchs, who had expelled the See also:original inhabitants. He was a See also:pupil of See also:Theophrastus of Eresus, whom he met at See also:Athens. When quite See also:young, he obtained a See also:prize for See also:boxing at the Olympic See also:games; a statue by Hippias was set up in See also:commemoration of his victory (See also:Pausanias vi. 13. 5). He was for some See also:time See also:despot of his native See also:island. Duris was the author of a comprehensive See also:historical See also:work ('Ivropfae) on Hellenico-Macedonian See also:history, from the See also:battle of See also:Leuctra (371) down to the See also:death of See also:Lysimachus (281), which was largely used by Diodorus Siculus. Other See also:works by him included a See also:life of See also:Agathocles of See also:Syracuse, the See also:annals (wpoi) of ,Samos chronologically arranged according to the lists of the priests of See also:Hera, and a number of See also:treatises on See also:literary and See also:artistic subjects. See also:Ancient authorities do not appear to have held a very high See also:opinion of his merits as a historian. See also:Plutarch (See also:Pericles, 28) expresses doubt as to his trustworthiness, See also:Dionysius of See also:Halicarnassus (De compos. verborum, 4) speaks disparagingly of his See also:style, and See also:Photius (See also:cod. 176) regards the arrangement of his work as altogether faulty.
