Italian chemist and poisoner in the 17th See also:century: His real name was probably Nicolo Egidi or Eggidio. Few See also:authentic details of his See also:life exist. Tradition, however, credits him with having been originally the salaried poisoner at See also:Rome of See also:Olympia Maidalchina, the See also:mistress of See also:Pope See also:Innocent X. Subsequently he became a See also:gentleman in waiting to See also:Queen See also:Christina of See also:Sweden, whose See also:taste for See also:chemistry may have influenced this See also:appointment. In 1663 his presence in See also:France aroused the suspicions of the See also:French See also:government, and he was imprisoned in the See also:Bastille. Here he is said to have made the acquaintance of See also:Godin de Sainte-Croix, the See also:lover of the marquise de Brinvilliers (q.v.). After three months' imprisonment, powerful influences secured Exili's See also:release, and he See also:left France for See also:England. In 1681 he was again in See also:Italy, where he married the countess Fantaguzzi, second See also:cousin of See also:Duke See also:Francis of See also:Modena.
