FALUN , a See also:town of See also:Sweden, See also:capital of the See also:district (lan) of Kopparberg, 153 M. N.W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 9606. It is situated in a See also:bare and rocky See also:country near the western See also:shore of See also:lake Runn. Here are the See also:oldest and most celebrated See also:copper mines in See also:Europe. Their produce has gradually decreased since the 17th See also:century, and is now unimportant, but sulphate of copper, See also:iron See also:pyrites, and some See also:gold, See also:silver, See also:sulphur and sulphuric See also:acid, and red ochre are also produced. The mines belong to the Kopparberg See also:Mining See also:Company (Stara Kopparbergs Bergslags Aktiebolag, formerly Kopparbergslagen). This is the oldest See also:industrial See also:corporation in Sweden, and perhaps the oldest still existing in the See also:world; it is known to have been established before 1347. Since its reorganization as a See also:joint-stock company in 1890 many of the shares have been held by the See also:crown, philanthropic institutions and other public bodies. The company also owns iron mines, See also:limestone and See also:quartz quarries, large iron-See also:works at Domnarfvet and elsewhere, a See also:great extent of forests and saw-See also:mills, and besides the output of the copper mines it produces manufactured iron and See also:steel, See also:timber, See also:wood-pulp, bricks and See also:charcoal. Falun has also railway See also:rolling-stock factories. There are museums of See also:mineralogy and See also:geology, a See also:lower school of mining, See also:model See also:room and scientific library.
