His See also:education was obtained mainly at the Ecole Normale in See also:Paris, where his See also:father, a painter and architect, was engaged in the construction of the Thfatre Italien. From his twenty-fifth See also:year he began to lecture in the colleges of See also:Evreux, See also:Dieppe, See also:Blois and See also:Toulouse. Later, he was lecturer at See also:Annecy and Casal-See also:Montferrat, and became See also:head of the education See also:department under Mamiani in 186o. Three years later he#vas appointed to the See also:chair of See also:philosophy at the Istituto di Perfezionamento at See also:Florence, and, in 1871, was made See also:professor of philosophy in the university of See also:Rome. On the See also:death of Mamiani in 1885 he became editor of the Filosofia delle scuole italiane, the See also:title of which he changed to Rivista italiana di filosofia. He wrote both on See also:psychology and on See also:metaphysics, but is known especially as a historian of philosophy. His See also:original See also:work is eclectic, combining the psychology of his teachers, Jules See also:Simon, See also:Saisset and Mamiani, with the See also:idealism of Rosmini and See also:Gioberti.
