The town is situated in the valley of the Metauro, in the centre of See also:fine scenery, at the See also:meeting-point of roads to See also:Fano, to the Furlo pass and Fossato di See also:Vico (the See also:ancient Via See also:Flaminia), to Urbino and to Sinigaglia, the last See also:crossing the See also:river by a fine See also:bridge. The See also:cathedral, rebuilt in 1772–1784, contains the See also:chief See also:work of the sculptor Domenico See also:Rosselli of Rovezzano, a richly sculptured See also:ancona of 1480. S. See also:Francesco has a See also:lunette by him over the portal. The library, founded by a See also:nephew of See also:Cardinal Passionei, contains some antiquities. Above the town is a See also:medieval See also:castle. There is a considerable See also:trade in See also:silk.

The ancient Forum Sempronii See also:

lay about 2 M. to the N.E. at S. Martino al Piano, where remains still exist. It was a station on the Via Flaminia and a See also:municipium. The date of its See also:foundation is not known. Excavations in 1879–188o led to the See also:discovery of a See also:house and of other buildings on the ancient road (A. Vernarecci in Notizie degli scavi, 188o, 458). It already had a See also:bishop in the years 499-502. In 1295 the Malatesta obtained See also:possession of it, and kept it until 1444, when it was sold, with Pesaro, to Federico di Montefeltro of Urbino, and with the latter it passed to the papacy under See also:Urban VIII. in 1631.
