ROSSELLI, COSIMO (1439—c. 1507) , Florentine painter, was See also:born in 1439. At the See also:age of fourteen he became a See also:pupil of See also:Neri di Bicci, and in 146o he worked as assistant to his See also:cousin Bernardo di Stefano Rosselli. The first See also:work of Cosimo mentioned by See also:Vasari exists in S. Ambrogio, in See also:Florence, over the third See also:altar on the See also:left. It is an " See also:Assumption of the Virgin," a youthful and feeble work. In the same See also:church, on the See also:wall of one of the chapels, is a See also:fresco by Cosimo which Vasari praises highly, especially for a portrait of the See also:young See also:scholar See also:Pico of See also:Mirandola. The See also:scene, a procession bearing a See also:miracle-working See also:chalice, is painted with much vigour and less mannerism than most of this artist's work. A picture painted by Rosselli for the church of the Annunziata, with figures of SS. See also:Barbara, See also:Matthew and the Baptist, is in the See also:Academy of Florence. Rosselli also spent some See also:time in See also:Lucca, where he painted several altar-pieces for various churches. A picture attributed to him, taken from the church of S.

Girolamo at See also:Fiesole, is now in the See also:National See also:Gallery of See also:London. It is a large See also:retable, with, in the centre, St See also:Jerome in the See also:wilderness kneeling before a crucifix, and at the sides See also:standing figures of St See also:Damasus and St See also:Eusebius, St See also:Paolo and St Eustachia; below is a See also:predella with small subjects. Though dry and hard in treatment, the figures are designed with much dignity. The See also:Berlin Gallery possesses three pictures by Rosselli: "The Virgin in See also:Glory," "The Entombment of See also:Christ," and " The See also:Massacre of the Innocents." In 148o Rosselli, together with the See also:chief painters of Florence, was invited by See also:Sixtus IV. to See also:Rome to assist in the See also:painting of the frescoes in the Sistine See also:Chapel. Three of these were executed by him—" The Destruction of See also:Pharaoh's See also:Army in the Red See also:Sea," " Christ See also:Preaching by the See also:Lake of See also:Tiberias," and " The Last Supper." The last of these is well preserved, but is a mediocre work. Vasari's See also:story about the See also:pope admiring Rosselli's paintings more than those of his abler See also:brother painters has probably little See also:foundation. Rosselli's Sistine frescoes were partly painted by his assistant See also:Piero di Cosimo, who was so called after Cosimo Rosselli. His chief pupil was Fra Bartolommeo. According to Vasari, Rosselli died in 1484, but this is a See also:mistake, as his will exists dated 25th of See also:November 1506 (see Gaye, See also:Car. See also:tined. ii. 457 n.).
