GEESTEMINDE , a seaport See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Weser, at the mouth of the Geeste, which separates it from See also:Bremerhaven, 32 M. N. from See also:Bremen by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 23,625. The See also:interest of the See also:place is purely See also:naval and commercial, its origin dating no farther back than 1857, when the construction of the See also:harbour was begun. The See also:great See also:basin, which can accommodate large See also:sea-going vessels, was completed in 1863, the See also:petroleum basin was opened in 1874, and additional wharves have been constructed for the reception of vessels engaged in the fishing See also:industry. The See also:fish See also:market of Geestemunde is the most important in Germany, and the See also:auction See also:hall practically determines the See also:price of fish throughout the See also:empire. The whole See also:port is protected by powerful fortifications. Among the See also:industrial establishments of the town are See also:shipbuilding yards, foundries, See also:engineering See also:works and saw-See also:mills.
