GHEEL, or See also:GEEL , a See also:town of See also:Belgium, about 30 M. E. of See also:Antwerp and in the same See also:province. Pop. (1904) 14,087. It is remarkable on See also:account of the See also:colony of insane persons which has existed there for many centuries. The See also:legend reads that in the See also:year 600 Dymphna, an Irish princess, was executed here by her See also:father, and in consequence of certain miracles she had effected she was canonized and made the See also:patron See also:saint of the insane. The old See also:Gothic See also:church is dedicated to her, and in the See also:choir is a See also:shrine, enclosing her See also:relics, with See also:fine See also:panel paintings representing incidents in her See also:life by, probably, a contemporary of Memling. The colony of the insane is established in the farms and houses See also:round the little See also:place within a circumference of 30 M. and is said to have existed since the 13th See also:century. This See also:area is divided into four sections, each having a See also:doctor and a See also:superintendent attached to it. The Gheel See also:system is regarded as the most humane method of dealing with the insane who have no homicidal tendencies, as it keeps up as See also:long as possible their See also:interest in life.
