GIBEON , a See also:

town in See also:Palestine whose inhabitants wrested a truce from See also:Joshua by a See also:trick (Josh. ix., x.); where the champions of See also:David fought those of Ish-bosheth (2 Sam. ii. 12-32); where See also:Joab murdered Amasa (ib. xx. 8-1o); and where Johanan went against See also:Ishmael to avenge the See also:murder of Gedaliah (Jer. xli. 12). Here was an important high See also:place (r See also:Kings iii. 4) where for a See also:time the See also:tabernacle was deposited (2 Chron. i. 3). The See also:present name is El-Jib; this is a small See also:village about 5 M. N.W. of See also:Jerusalem, See also:standing on an isolated See also:hill above a See also:flat See also:corn valley. The village is famous for its springs, and the reputation seems See also:ancient (cf. 2 Sam. ii. 13; Jer. xli.
