GIBEONITES , the inhabitants of See also:Gibeon, an Amorite or Hivite stronghold, the See also:modern El-Jib, 5 M. N.W. from See also:Jerusalem. According to See also:Joshua xviii. 25 it was one of the cities of See also:Benjamin. When the Israelites, under Joshua, invaded See also:Canaan, the Gibeonites by a crafty ruse escaped the See also:fate of See also:Jericho and Ai and secured See also:protection from the invaders (Joshua ix.). See also:Cheyne thinks this See also:story the See also:attempt of a later See also:age to explain the See also:long See also:independence of Gibeon and the use of the Gibeonites as slaves in See also:Solomon's See also:temple. An attempt on the See also:part of See also:Saul to exterminate the See also:clan is mentioned in 2 Sam. xxi., and this slaughter may possibly be identified with the See also:massacre at See also:Nob recorded in r Sam. xxii. 17-19 (see Ency. Bib. See also:col. 1717), The See also:place is also associated with the murders of Asahel (2 Sam. ii. 12), Amasa (2 Sam. xx. 8) and Gedaliah (Jer. xli. 12), and with the wrathful intervention of Yahweh referred to by See also:Isaiah (See also:xxviii. 21), which we may identify with the memorable victory of See also:David over the See also:Philistines recorded in 2 Sam. v. 25 (See also:reading Gibeon for Geba).
