GOPPINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, on the right See also:bank of the Fils, 22 M. E.S.E. of See also:Stuttgart on the railway to See also:Friedrichshafen. Pop. (1905) 20,870. It possesses a See also:castle built, partly with stones from the ruined castle of See also:Hohenstaufen, by See also:Duke See also:Christopher of Wurttemberg in the 16th See also:century and now used as public offices, two Evangelical churches, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church, a See also:synagogue, a classical school, and a See also:modern school. The manufactures are considerable and include See also:linen and woollen See also:cloth, See also:leather, See also:glue, See also:paper and toys. There are See also:machine shops and tanneries in the town. Three m. N. of the town are the ruins of the castle of Hohenstaufen. Goppingen originally belonged to the See also:house of Hohenstaufen, and in 1270 came into See also:possession of the See also:counts of Wurttemberg. It was surrounded by walls in 1129, and was almost entirely rebuilt after a See also:fire in 1782. See See also:Pfeiffer, Beschreibung and Geschichte der Stadt Goppingen (1885).
