GUERNIERI, or See also:WERNER , a celebrated See also:mercenary See also:captain who lived about the See also:middle of the 14th See also:century. He was a member of the See also:family of the See also:dukes of Urslingen, and probably a descendant of the dukes of See also:Spoleto. From 1340 to 1343 he was in the service of the citizens of See also:Pisa, but afterwards he collected a See also:troop of adventurers which he called the See also:Great See also:Company, and with which he plundered See also:Tuscany and See also:Lombardy. He then entered the service of See also:Louis I. the Great, See also:king of See also:Hungary and See also:Poland, whom he assisted to obtain See also:possession of See also:Naples; but when dismissed from this service his ravages became more terrible than ever, culminating in the dreadful See also:sack of Anagni in 1358, shortly after which Guernieri disappeared from See also:history.
