HALAESA , an See also:ancient See also:town on the See also:north See also:coast of See also:Sicily, about 14 M. E. of Cephaloedium [See also:Cefalu], to the See also:east of the See also:modern See also:Castel di Tusa, founded in 403 B.C. by Archonides, See also:tyrant of Herbita, whose name it sometimes See also:bore: we find, e.g. Halaisa Archonida on a See also:coin of the See also:time of See also:Augustus (Corp. inscrip. See also:Lat. x., See also:Berlin, 1883, p. 768). It was the first town to surrender to the See also:Romans in the First Punic See also:War, and was granted freedom and See also:immunity from tithe. It became a See also:place of some importance in See also:Roman days, especially as a See also:port, and entirely outstripped its See also:mother See also:city. Halaesa is the only place in Sicily where an inscription dedicated to a Roman See also:governor of the republican See also:period (perhaps in 93 B.C.) has come to See also:light. (T.
