At an See also:early See also:age he was intended for the priesthood, and placed under the care of the See also:brothers See also:Lamennais, but his strong See also:desire to become a painter finally triumphed over See also:family opposition, and in 184o he courageously See also:left Plouha for See also:Paris—his See also:sole resources being a See also:pension of five See also:hundred francs, granted him for one See also:year only by the See also:municipality of his native See also:town. At Paris Hamon received valuable counsels and encouragement from See also:Delaroche and See also:Gleyre, and in 1848 he made his See also:appearance at the See also:Salon with " Le Tombeau du See also:Christ" (Musee de Marseille), and a decorative See also:work, " Dessus de See also:Porte." The See also:works which he exhibited in 1849—" Une Affiche romaine," " L'Egalite au serail," and " Perroquet jasant avec deux jeunes filles "—obtained no marked success. Hamon was therefore content to accept a See also:place in the manufactory of Sevres, but an enamelled See also:casket by his See also:hand having attracted See also:notice at the See also:London See also:International See also:Exhibition of 1851, he received a See also:medal, and, reinspired by success, left his See also:post to try his chances again at the Salon of 1852. " La Comedie humaine," which he then exhibited, turned the See also:tide of his See also:fortune, and " Ma sceur n'y est pas" (See also:purchased by the See also:emperor) obtained for its author a third-class medal in 1853. At the Paris International Exhibition of 1855, when Hamon re-exhibited the casket of 1851, together with several vases and pictures of which " L'Amour et son troupeau," " Ce n'est pas moi," and "Une Gardeuse d'enfants" were the See also:chief, he received a medal of the second class, and the ribbon of the See also:legion of See also:honour. In the following year he was absent in the See also:East, but in 1857 he reappeared with " Boutique a quatre sous," " Papillon enchaine," " Cantharide esclave," " Devideuses," &c., in all ten pictures; " L'Amnur en visite " was contributed to the Salon of 1859, and " See also:Vierge de See also:Lesbos," " Tutelle," " La Voliere," "L'Escamoteur" and"La Sceur ainee" were all seen in 1861. Hamon now spent some See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)

time in See also:Italy, chiefly at See also:Capri, whence in 1864 he sent to Paris " L'Aurore" and " Un Jour de fiancailles. The See also:influence of Italy was also evident in" See also:Les See also:Muses a Pompei," his sole contribution to the Salon of 1866, a work which enjoyed: See also:great popularity and was re-exhibited at the International Exhibition of 1867, together with " La See also:Promenade " and six other pictures of previous years. His last work, " Le Triste Rivage," appeared at the Salon of 1873. It was painted at St See also:Raphael, where Hamon had finally settled in a little See also:house on the shores of the Mediterranean, See also:close by See also:Alphonse See also:Karr's famous See also:garden. In this house he died on the 29th of May 1874.
