HASLEMERE , a See also:

S.W. from See also:London by the London & See also:South-Western railway. It is situated in an elevated valley between the bold ridges of Hindhead (895 ft.) and See also:Black-down (918 ft.). Their summits are open and covered with See also:heath, but their flanks and the See also:lower ground are magnificently wooded. The hills are deeply scored by steep and picturesque valleys, of which the most remarkable is the See also:Devil's See also:Punch Bowl, a hollow of See also:regular See also:form omthewest flank of Hindhead. The invigorating See also:air has combined with scenic attraction to make the See also:district a favourite See also:place of See also:residence. See also:Professor See also:Tyndall built a See also:house on the See also:top of Hindhead, setting an example followed by many others. On Blackdown, closely screened by plantations, is Aldworth, built for See also:Alfred, See also:Lord See also:Tennyson, who died here in 1892.
