HASLINGDEN , a See also:

market-See also:town and municipal See also:borough in the Rossendale and See also:Heywood See also:parliamentary divisions of See also:Lancashire, See also:England, 19 m. N. by W. from See also:Manchester by the Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire railway. Pop. (roof), 18,543. It lies in a hillydistriet on the See also:borders of the See also:forest of Rossendale, and is supposed by some to derive its name from the See also:hazel trees which formerly abounded in its neighbourhood. The old town stood on the slope of a See also:bill, but the See also:modern See also:part has extended about its See also:base. The See also:parish See also:church of St See also:James was rebuilt in 178o, with the exception of the See also:tower, which See also:dates from the See also:time of See also:Henry VIII. The woollen manufacture was formerly the See also:staple. The town, however, steadily increasing in importance, has See also:cotton, woollen and See also:engineering See also:worksSee also:coal-See also:mining, See also:quarrying and brickmaking are carried on in the neighbourhood. The borough, as incorporated in 1891, comprised several townships and parts of townships, but under the See also:Local See also:Government See also:Act of 1894 these were See also:united into one See also:civil parish. The See also:corporation consists of a See also:mayor, 6 aldermen and 18 councillors. See also:Area, 8196 acres.
