HELLER, See also:STEPHEN (181 1888) , See also:Austrian pianist and composer, was See also:born at Pest on the 15th of May 1815. (See also:Fetis's See also:dictionary says 1814, but this is almost certainly wrong.) He was at first intended for a lawyer, but at nine years of See also:age performed so successfully at a See also:concert that he was sent to See also:Vienna to study under See also:Czerny. See also:Halm was his See also:principal See also:master, and from the age of twelve he gave concerts in Vienna, and made a tour through See also:Hungary, See also:Poland and See also:Germany. At See also:Augsburg he had the See also:good See also:fortune to be befriended when See also:ill by a wealthy See also:family, who practically adopted him and gave him the opportunity to See also:complete his musical See also:education. In 1838 he went to See also:Paris, and soon became intimate with See also:Liszt, See also:Chopin, See also:Berlioz and their set, among whom was See also:Halle, throughout his See also:life an indefatigable performer of Heller's See also:music. In 1849 he came to See also:England and played a few times, and in 1862 he appeared with Halle at the Crystal See also:Palace. He outlived the See also:great reputation he had enjoyed among cultivated amateurs for so many years, and was almost forgotten when he died at Paris on the 14th of See also:January 1888. His See also:pianoforte pieces, almost all of them published in sets and provided with See also:fancy names, do not show very startling originality, but their See also:grace and refinement could not but make them popular with players and listeners of all classes.
