HENSCHEL, See also:GEORGE [Ismoa GEORG] (1850— ) , See also:English musician (naturalized 1890), of See also:German See also:family, was See also:born at See also:Breslau, and educated as a pianist, making his first public See also:appearance in See also:Berlin in 1862. He subsequently, however, took up singing, having See also:developed a See also:fine baritone See also:voice; and in 1868 he sang the See also:part of Hans See also:Sachs in See also:Meistersinger at See also:Munich. In 1877 he began a successful career in See also:England, singing at the See also:principal concerts; and in 1881 he married the See also:American See also:soprano, Lilian See also:Bailey (d. 1901), who was associated with him in a number of vocal recitals. He was also prominent as a conductor, starting the See also:London See also:symphony concerts in 1886, and both in England and See also:America (where he was the first conductor of the See also:Boston symphony concerts, 1881) he took a leading part in advancing his See also:art. He composed a number of instrumental See also:works, a fine Stabat Mater (See also:Birmingham festival, 1894), &c., and an See also:opera, See also:Nubia (See also:Dresden, 1899).
