KARIKAL , a See also:

French See also:settlement in See also:India, situated on the See also:south-See also:east See also:coast, within the limits of See also:Tanjore See also:district, with-an See also:area of 53 sq. m., and 'a See also:population (1901) of 56,595. The site was promised to the French by the Tanjore See also:raja in 1738, in return for services rendered, but was only obtained by them by force in 1739. It was captured by the See also:British in 176o, restored in 1765, again taken in 1768, and finally restored. in 1817. The See also:town is neatly built on one of the mouths of the See also:Cauvery, and carries on a brisk See also:trade with See also:Ceylon, exporting See also:rice and importing chiefly See also:European articles and See also:timber. A chef de l'administralion, subordinate to the See also:government at See also:Pondicherry, is in See also:charge of the settlement, and there is a tribunal of first instance.
