KONITZ , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:province of See also:West See also:Prussia, at the junction of See also:railways to See also:Schneidemuhl and See also:Gnesen, 68 m. S.W. of See also:Danzig. Pop. (1905), 11,014. It is still surrounded by its old fortifications, has two Evangelical and two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, a new town-See also:hall, handsome public offices, and a See also:prison. It has See also:iron-foundries, saw-See also:mills, See also:electrical See also:works, and manufactures of bricks. Konitz was the first fortified See also:post established in Prussia by See also:Hermann Balk, who in 1230 had been commissioned as Landmeister, by the See also:grand-See also:master of the See also:Teutonic See also:order, to reduce the See also:heathen Prussians. For a See also:long See also:time it continued to be a See also:place of military importance. See Uppenkamp, Geschichte der Stadt Konitz (Konitz, 1873).
