LAEVIUS (? c. 8o B.C.) , a Latin poet of whom practically nothing is known. The earliest reference to him is perhaps in Suetonius (De grammaticis, 3), though it is not certain that the Laevius Milissus there referred to is the same See also:person. Definite references do not occur before the 2nd See also:century (See also:Fronto, Ep. ad M. Caes. i. 3; Aulus See also:Gellius, Noct. Att. ii. 24, xii. 10, xix. 9 ; See also:Apuleius, De magia, 30; Porphyrion, Ad Horat. carm. iii. 1, 2). Some sixty See also:miscellaneous lines are preserved (see Bahrens, Fragm. poet. See also:ram. pp.

287-293), from which it is difficult to see how See also:

ancient critics could have regarded him as the See also:master of See also:Ovid or See also:Catullus. Gellius and See also:Ausonius See also:state that he composed an Erotopaegnia, and in other See also:sources he is credited with See also:Adonis, See also:Alcestis, Centauri, See also:Helena, Ino, Protesilaudamia, Sirenocirca, See also:Phoenix, which may, however, be only the parts of the Erotopaegnia. They were not serious poems, but See also:light and often licentious skits on the heroic myths. See O.
