LUNA (mod. Luni) , an See also:ancient See also:city of See also:Etruria, See also:Italy, 42 M. S.E. of the See also:modern See also:Sarzana. It was the frontier See also:town of Etruria, on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river, Macra, the boundary in imperial times between Etruria and See also:Liguria. When the See also:Romans first appeared in these parts, however, the Ligurians were in See also:possession of the territory as far as See also:Pisa. It derived its importance mainly from its See also:harbour, which was the gulf now known as the Gulf of See also:Spezia, and not merely the See also:estuary of the Macra as some authors have supposed. The town was apparently not established until 177 B.C., when a See also:colony was founded here, though jhe harbour is mentioned by See also:Ennius, who sailed hence for See also:Sardinia in 205 B.C. under See also:Manlius Torquatus. An inscription of 155 B.C., found in the See also:forum of Luna in 1857, was dedicated to M. See also:Claudius See also:Marcellus in See also:honour of his See also:triumph over the Ligurians and Apuani.
